The digital ebook is the latest craze in technology. Never has reading on the go been easier. The ebook is equivalent to a hard copy book. Some publishers only publish ebooks. Personnel computers and certain cell phones can also be used as an ebook. To fully appreciate the digital ebook, lets have a look at it’s history. To many peoples surprise, the original digital ebook was invented in 1971. These original models were made for small audiences. They were mainly used for technical manuals and techniques in manufacturing. When the internet took off in the 1990′s, so did the digital ebook. Publishers who could not get their books published the traditional way turned to the ebook. Starting in 1998, many libraries began offering free ebooks to their customers. By 2010 ebook sales have outgrown the number of hardcover books. There are many advantages and disadvantages to the ebook. Let’s first look at all the advantages. As of August of 2009 there were over 2 million free ebooks available for download. With this many choices, a reader will never be bored. Digital ebooks never go out of print. They are always ready for download. Carrying an ebook is much lighter than carrying around a hardcover version. Using an ebook is also better for the environment. Trees will not need to be cut down for their paper. As with everything, there are downsides to the digital ebook. The biggest disadvantage is the start up cost. Ebook readers can be more expensive than a hardcover book. Also not all books will be available on the ebook. The digital resolution for digital ebooks are not as good as traditional books. This may make reading difficult for those with vision difficulties. The digital ebook is continuing to grow in popularity. Before purchasing your digital ebook, do your homework.
